Securus Technologies is Calling for Industry Integrity

In the late 1990s, Global Tel Link (GTL), an inmate communications provider, had it’s unethical, and unlawful practices during the time it served Louisiana inmates exposed in a 17-page Order by the Louisiana Public Service Commission. According to the PR Newswire, in this Order, No. U-20784-B, GTL was found to have added seconds to inmate call durations; had calls programmed at higher rates than those that were appropriate for the industry at the time, added costs to calls with add-on programs. GTL also billed calls more than one time, in essence, deliberately overcharging consumers all to the outlandish tune of $1,243,000.00 in overpayments shouldered by the tax payers of Louisiana. Unacceptable? Most certainly. Securus Technologies Chief Executive Officer, Richard Smith, was appalled at the past grievous breach of industry and consumer trust and is inconsolable about the fact that GTL continued to engage in the illegal and unethical practices outlined in the 1998 report. Smith is revealing the many GTL ethical and professional missteps over the next six months. Smith has made integrity a part of the minimal expectations within the Securus America sphere of service, and as a leader in communications for investigations, corrections, law enforcement, emergency response, incident management, public information, investigation, inmate self-servicing, emergency response and more, is asking no more of Global Tel Link than he does of himself and those who work in and with his company. To expect integrity within the industry is not an anomaly, as far as Smith is concerned, and GTL disregarding the consumers it exists to serve is unacceptable and will not be summarily disregarded. Securus sharing the misdeeds of a co-laborer is not easily done, but Smith feels GTL must be taken to task on the very things he is striving for in order to make our world a safer place to live.
